A laboratory in approach, not a testing facility
“Solar shelter laboratory” describes a way of asking questions. We are not claiming an accredited laboratory, a professional design practice or a product-testing service. The site helps design-curious readers and early-stage planners understand relationships between sunlight, airflow, materials and use.
What we cover
Our four guides examine solar protection, passive and mixed-mode cooling, material assemblies and built precedents. We connect these topics because a useful building strategy rarely depends on one device. An excellent wall cannot make an exposed window irrelevant, and a courtyard cannot fix every ventilation problem.
How to read the evidence
We distinguish physical principles from outcomes that need project-specific verification. A building photograph can show a deep overhang; it cannot prove indoor comfort or annual energy use. A manufacturer’s product figure is not a whole-building result. Historic precedents require social and maintenance context alongside their formal lessons.
Further-reading links prioritize public institutions, conservation organizations and technical resources. Their inclusion does not imply endorsement, affiliation or agreement with every statement on this website. We do not present illustrative strategy comparisons as measured performance data.
Where the scope ends
We do not provide stamped drawings, structural calculations, code approvals, personalized health advice or guaranteed energy savings. Conditions differ between coastal and inland deserts, between seasons and between occupants. Use the guides to prepare better questions for local architects, engineers, conservation specialists and public-health authorities.
Corrections and questions
If you notice a factual error, send the page address, the passage concerned and a reliable supporting source. Please distinguish a documented correction from a project-specific preference. We welcome clear questions but cannot guarantee individual design advice or a reply.
